I am Gen Y

I decided to post this after viewing the video form of the Time's article "Millennials: The Me Me Me Generation." Who are Millennials and what is Gen Y you may ask?

Definition: "THE digital generation with an overall instinct to use technology to solve challenges and creates opportunities."

I am Gen Y and am proud of it. I consider myself tech savvy, in the sense that I was born into an emerging world of technology and have grown up surrounded by laptops, cell phones, tablets, you name it. My generation is plugged into technology everyday of their lives and essentially uses it from the time they wake up to the moment they fall asleep. Constantly checking their Facebook, Twitter and Instagraming is a thing of the norm.

When it comes to the workplace, we prefer and are attracted to companies that embrace the use of technology and new means of communications. Another integral aspect is the sense of teamwork. Working as a team is high on my agenda because it's a great opportunity to bounce ideas around, generate new ones and give others motivation as well as inspiration.

I am a big believer of startups and entrepreneurship. It's great to see so many young people have the capabilities and eagerness to do something they are passionate about and not be afraid to fail. More Gen Y are taking the plunge to make things happen. We are independent innovative thinkers and will not settle for traditional mindsets. We relish in continual learning. We enjoy going into new work environments and learning from our superiors or well I do. Some don't realize i.e. Baby Boomers that Gen Y will soon make up 75% of the workforce and without that guidance or mentorship, businesses  will change. I will be blunt about it but some Baby Boomers are too stubborn to change their views and will not lend a helping hand to its youth. This must change!

On the same spectrum of workplaces, office layouts are crucial to productivity. Gen Y are all about open concepts which encourages conversations and collaboration to occur. Cubicles and dark corner offices are all a thing of the past. I say this because Gen Y are use to working anywhere, everywhere and at any time of the day as we're connected and attached to our laptops and smartphones. So all we require is a workspace, an outlet, a cup of coffee and we're ready to go!

We are a curious generation that will do our best at the opportunities presented to us and say YES to the future of possibilities. In an era of computers and internet, we wish to educate ourselves to help others. I for one, am all about the lean in movement about offering women the ongoing inspiration and support to help them achieve their goals. I will not be afraid to speak my mind and own my success!

Enjoy!

It's Picnic Time

With a twist, Parisian style that is!

Keep it simple and low maintenance because there's no cooking involved or cutlery for that matter.

On the menu is brie along with other imported cheeses and a crusty baguette of course accompanied by a rustic salad, quiche and oh smoked salmon. Let's not forget a chilled bottle of sparkling water or wine.

With the basics covered, it's time to indulge in an easy dessert. Something that doesn't melt and is sturdy to transport would be ideal. My picnic favorites are macarons or eclairs, both sweet and airy, light enough for a hot summer day. However, for a healthy option that pairs well with the wine, bring fresh strawberries. They're delicious and inexpensive!

Last but no least, don't forget the blanket!

Voila, takes less than ten seconds to plan!

    Indulge

Sometimes you just have to indulge in the simple things to make you happy. There are so many delicious, comforting and joyous moments in our life everyday, but they are often times lost because we have the mindset of always being on the move instead of savouring what's in front of us. Whether you're stressed or just craving something, go ahead and treat yourself.

     My favorite flavour...

    {Strawberry Ice Cream}

Ah, hello this is the best comfort food to have year round...

    {Mac & Cheese}

Being from Montreal, I am obsessed with these! They are perfect in the a.m...

    {Croissant}

Some other of my favorite little indulgences include:

Lounging around the house in my pj's
Watching a marathon of a show
Taking a guilt free nap or sleeping in
Having long hot showers and alone time
Nibbling on some nice sharp cheese and crackers
Vanilla and caramel frozen yogurt and macarons

    Enjoy!

    The Blazer

Every woman needs a classic fitting blazer in her closet and if you don't, get your behind moving! It's fabulous to own and I know first hand because I love throwing them on to complete a look. Buying a blazer is a great investment and is the perfect weekday wardrobe answer to your weekend outfits.

A blazer can be dressed up or done casually. Worn with a statement necklace and a basic top, it adds polish and professionalism. Paired over a dress, it can cover a miriade of aspects and provides coverage for those office environments.

On weekends, throw on any shirt with a pair of leggings or skinny jeans. Then slip into a blazer of your choice and a pair of cute flats and you're ready to go!

    Weekend Essentials

Why hello again my lovelies! It's finally Friday and all I could think about this week was Stella & Dot and cheese! So I thought I could share one of my other favorites:

The Cameron Pendant is simply great! It's a hand sculpted coral branch in white enamel with turquoise and lapis colored stone accents, on a gold plated brass diamond link chain. It can easily dress up any outfit! As the long weekend slowly approaches, you will definitely need effortless and stylish pieces to toss on before you head out to enjoy the sun. I always like to accessorize to complete my look, all it takes is a statement piece. Scarves such as the Palm Springs Turquoise Stripe is perfect to add a pop of color to your outfit. It is soft and delicate for a day of running errands, great as a semi cover up at the lake and the most ideal comfortable wrap as you go into the night sitting by a bonfire. Scarves are most certainly not just for the fall. They are wonderful because paired with a bold necklace like the Cameron Pendant, makes packing for a weekend fairly easy as they can be worn with several outfits.

    Just for Cheese Lovers

Several of you must know that cheese is my weakness, old, aged, smoked, soft, cream, the list goes on! I can never go back to processed cheese or mild tasting ones either. I relish in the sharp distinct taste some cheese hold and paired with the right wine or food, life is complete. But you may be asking, why all the cheese talk? Well I had the lovely opportunity to attend an event that was organized at Huff Estates to get an exclusive preview of this year's Great Canadian Cheese Festival, which is less than a month away!

It started off by tasting a sparkling rosé..

The smoked gouda, cheese and wine expert Andrew Laliberté from Glen Echo Fine Foods, presented was one of my favorites...

Sampled 10-Year Aged Cheddar made by Maple Dale Cheese who are Grand Prix winners ...

From Prince Edward County Lavender, a totally unique herb for cooking...

From Angelo Bean, artisan wine infused sausages you won't want to live without...

Among the other present were Chef Michael Hoy who presented the menu he had created for Wine & Dine at Huff Estates Winery, one of three off-site events that is being offered this year on Saturday evening of the Festival, the others being Gastronomy on the Farm with Jamie Kennedy and Cheese+Beer=Cheers at Acoustic Grill.

After this event, I got to experience the true taste of Prince Edward County with artisans rather than a conglomerate of mass producers. I realized that PEC is the destination for wine, cheese and food lovers. It is apparently one of "Canada's leading gastronomic destinations," which I now can attest to. With the amount of wineries in the region, it's quite impressive. The cheese festival that is to take place on June 1-2, will feature close to 100 exhibitors and vendors and more than 3000 consumers from coast to cost! This event is a great place to "meet, learn, taste and buy the best in artisan cheese and fine foods and sample wine, craft beer and crisp cider."

    Hope to see you there!

    Strength in Writing

If you don't know this about me yet, I use writing as a way to express my feelings and emotions. At the start of May 2011, I used it as a creative escape to get away from the stress of school, expectations and a simple way to heal. It was a reassuring method that made the world around me a stable place. I wrote to confront unexpressed feelings. I was able to put together my words more easily in my head. Writing helped me regain some level of confidence when I couldn't use my words conventionally to speak. It forced me to sort through the thoughts, make sense of everything and helped to organize and simplify experiences. It brought some form of sanity as I basically was bottling up everything from life, friends, university, you name it. Just typing away on my laptop made the world less uncertain and more liberating.

That's when I started blogging and writing about topics that interest me. It gave me a sense of control for once and do something that wasn't going to be marked, judged or criticized by people I knew. It was my dear friend Karen who insisted I start and I have her and my drive to thank for it.

With this being said, it's actually important to surround yourself with those who will challenge and inspire you. Friends who aren't happy for you in your achievements or don't care to ask about your life in general, are not worth waiting around for. I've come to realize that and now have friends who are amazing at what they strive to do. I write this for me but also for them. If it wasn't for those who kept pushing me and encouraging me, I wouldn't be where I am today.

Whether my writing is read or not, I find it rewarding and worth it. You get to share new ideas, stories and connect with unique beings. Most importantly, writing has given me the strength to get back up when things go astray and think happy thoughts.

    Why do you write?

"Let's do it" with Warren Buffett | Levo League

Yesterday Levo League, a community dedicated to helping gen y women build connections to elevate their careers, had the wonderful opportunity to host Office Hours with THE Warren Buffett and oh did he have lots to share. Known as the most successful investor of the 20th century, Warren is also renowned in helping women excel in the workforce. His dedication has taken strides through his social media presence and now his mentorship profile on Levo League (how exciting!).

Warren offered insights to succeed professionally and personally. The main message he conveyed was that every person (man or woman) should be able to live up to their potential and never give up on the job that they are truly passionate about. When one is trying to climb the professional ladder, Warren suggested the thought of trying to have the job that you would have, if you were independently rich. In other words, don't be afraid to go out there and apply for those so called dream jobs you want (and are qualified for), but be sure you work for someone you admire and will learn from. As an individual you need to make it clear that you're worth spending time with, whether that is an interview, networking or already working. This brings me into the topic of women and the ability to speak up.  I know I am one of them and can attest to being 'shy' with unknown surroundings. At times, I tend to not express my ideas when I clearly know I should be and can. With more male employers and mentors such as Warren, I have learned a great deal about truly leaning it and aspiring to learn everything I can to achieve my goals.

Another great insight, Warren shared was on a more personal level. He simply stated that you should hangout around people who are better than you are, in the sense of mentors and peers. However also want to be the person that if you were to pick a best friend you'd have the same qualities. This is so true and I try to surround myself with individuals who are like minded, will challenge me and inspire myself to go above and beyond.

It was surreal that Warren was answering real people's questions, sharing real stories, true emotions and was connected. With the power of technology, his voice was heard and accessible worldwide.

    Mother's Day Gift Guide

Mother's day is slowly approaching and while sometimes mums aren't too keen on receiving gifts from their children that aren't necessary or non functional, it shows that you love and appreciate them. It's absolutely a must that the more you spoil your mum, the better. As a person, she has done so much and she deserves that attention.

My go-to store at the moment for decor, a good book and primarily gifts would be Indigo. They have great items for every occasion and lifestyle. Every mum deserves to be stylish with a new clutch, scarf or a fabulous piece of jewelry. Make her feel feminine and young again with some brighter fun pieces!

    J.Crew's Looks We Love

Oh J.Crew I love these looks as well! I am rather smitten over the outfits. I am most particularly loving look No. 1, it's all about "a throw on and go summer layer"! I may not be able to wear this to the office but it would be a great weekend outfit. J.Crew's styling always inspires you to mix things up and this summer is no exception! My next trip to Toronto will definetly include popping by J.Crew to pick up some cute apparel.

    Design Tips

Last week I got the opportunity to listen to Sarah Richardson speak at Inspiration2Women about how she got her start in the decor industry. She seemed out of her element initially when talking about her history but once she began giving design advice, she was her true self and this is some of what she shared:

Make a statement with a classic foundation
This can be accomplished by things that are easy to change such as pillows, vases or art.

    Embrace your budget
It doesn't matter where you've bought your items but how you put them together.

    Celebrate the natural beauty
Don't be afraid to use exposed brick or wooden beams as a way to accentuate a room.

    White is always right
Oh how I love this one! White simply brightens a room and creates the illusion of a larger space and primarily makes a dramatic impact.

    Sparkle
From mirrors, crystal, glass and that feminine touch, you can add shine to any room you desire.

Enjoy the thrill of the hunt & Think outside the box
Don't be discouraged if you are having a hard time coming up with inspiration or have no clue where to start. It's not about where you shop or where you find things, but what you do with the items you get. It's always an adventure to try something new, it's an experiment and simply embrace the opportunity.

Do a little DIY to add charm
Have a little fun with a project that may require you to go to a Flea Market or antique hunting and sprucing up an item. Make your own rules and statements.

    Know your look
Look to what inspires you whether it be going on Pinterest, creating a mood board or cutting up pictures from a magazine. Have a slight idea of what you like and dislike. Remember be adaptable with your choices as well.
