The month of March is synonymous to the sweet and smokey flavours of maple syrup. In the Prince Edward County, it signifies the celebration of the first harvest and the arrival of spring. Maple in the County taking place March 21-23, 2014 is the time for you to take in the culinary creations and offerings of such a Maple Syrup Festival.
Enjoy a dose of syrup at breakfast before heading to one of the 10 sugar bushes for sugar shack demonstrations, sugar bush tours, or maple taffy. With lots of activities for the whole family such as petting zoos and live music, don't forget to stop by one of the many wineries as well.
Last year was my first experience of Maple in the County and I will certainly be visiting again this year. The day started bright and early as I drove from Kingston. The first stop was Waupoos Estate Winery where I learnt about their process of tapping maple syrup, saw some oh so cute farm animals and had a scrumptious breakfast. The next stop took us up the road at County Cider Company for tastings of maple infused crepes and cider overlooking the region. Filled bellies and bags of maple syrup, iced wine and cider in hand, the day ended at Black River Cheese browsing the shop and indulging in maple cheddar cheese and maple ice cream!
We shall see where I will end up this year. Perhaps Three Dog Winery, Rosehall Run Vineyards and Fifty Town Artisan Cheese Company? Who knows! If you have suggestions, please do let me know!
